By Leah Young, MSW
At River Grove Therapy, we are always striving to provide the best possible support to our clients, particularly when it comes to the unique challenges faced by transgender youth and their families. Recently, our team had the opportunity to participate in an invaluable training with Heather Kirby of Kirby Creative Clinical Solutions, which has equipped us with the knowledge and tools to offer more informed and compassionate care to the transgender community.
This training, led by Heather Kirby, focused on the complexities that transgender youth navigate in today’s world. From issues related to gender identity, family dynamics, and social pressures to providing support in affirming therapy, Heather’s expertise gave us practical insights on how to create a safe, inclusive, and supportive space for transgender individuals and their families.
Empowering the River Grove Team
One of the most powerful aspects of this training was its ability to address not only the challenges faced by transgender youth but also the critical role that therapists, families, and communities play in their mental health and well-being. By equipping us with up-to-date knowledge on the gender spectrum, inclusive language, and best practices for working with transgender youth, we now feel even more confident in our ability to support families throughout their journey.
Transgender youth often experience heightened levels of stress, anxiety, and depression due to societal misunderstanding and discrimination. At River Grove, we believe in fostering an environment where these youth can be their true selves without fear of judgment. This training helped us refine our skills in providing empathetic, affirming care, which is crucial for the mental health and success of transgender youth.
A Safe Space for Families
The importance of having a safe and understanding space for transgender youth and their families cannot be overstated. We understand that navigating the complexities of gender identity can be difficult, and families may not always know where to turn for support. River Grove Therapy is committed to being a safe, welcoming, and supportive place where families can find the resources, guidance, and care they need.
As a result of this recent training, our team is now better prepared to help families understand the experiences of their transgender children, address any challenges they may face, and assist in navigating societal barriers. We are here to offer therapy and resources that are not only grounded in evidence-based practices but also tailored to each family’s specific needs and concerns.
