Why Summer is a Great Time to Start Therapy

By Lucas Watling & Melanie Froemke

Summer is often associated with vacations, longer days, and a long-awaited break from the routines that fill much of the year. While many people think of summer as a time to rest and recharge, it can also be one of the most meaningful times to begin therapy!

Summer Slow-Down Can Allow Greater Clarity

Throughout much of the year, life moves quickly. School schedules, work responsibilities, extracurricular activities, and family commitments can leave little room for reflection. We may notice stress, anxiety, relationship challenges, or emotional overwhelm, but feel too busy to fully explore what is contributing to those experiences.

Summer often creates a natural pause in that rhythm, offering the time and space to tune in more closely to ourselves. This slower pace can make it easier to gain clarity about what is working well and where additional support may be helpful.

Therapy provides an opportunity to better understand patterns, process difficult experiences, strengthen coping skills, and explore goals for the future. Rather than waiting until challenges become overwhelming, beginning therapy during a calmer season can allow you to approach growth and healing with greater intention and energy!

Decreased Demands & Time to Reflect

For children and adolescents, summer can be an especially valuable time to start therapy. Without the added demands of homework, tests, and busy school schedules, many young people have more emotional energy available for self-exploration and therapeutic work. Summer can provide an opportunity to address concerns related to anxiety, emotional regulation, peer relationships, family stress, grief, or life transitions in a less pressured environment.

Beginning therapy during the summer can also help individuals and families prepare for the seasons ahead. As fall approaches, school, work, and extracurricular commitments often return quickly. Establishing therapeutic support before those transitions occur can help create a stronger foundation for managing stress, navigating challenges, and maintaining emotional well-being throughout the year.

Greater Availability & Finding the Right Fit

Summer can also be an ideal time to begin the search for a therapist who feels like the right fit for you or your family. During the school year, therapist’s schedules often fill quickly. In the summer, however, temporary schedule changes, vacations, and transitions can create greater appointment availability.

This increased flexibility may make it easier to connect with a therapist whose expertise, personality, and approach align with your needs, rather than feeling pressured to choose from only the appointments that happen to be available. Research consistently shows that the therapeutic relationship is one of the most important factors in successful therapy, making it worthwhile to find a provider who feels like a strong match. Starting therapy during the summer can provide time to establish that relationship, build trust, and develop momentum before the busier demands of fall return!

Proactive Therapy

Therapy can be most impactful when it is approached proactively rather than just reactively. Just as we prioritize physical health through prevention and self-care, investing in our mental and emotional health before difficulties intensify can lead to greater resilience, self-awareness, and overall well-being. Whether you are seeking support for yourself, your child, or your family, summer may offer a unique opportunity to slow down, gain insight, and begin meaningful work toward the life you want to build.

Here at River Grove Therapy, we can help you support you in growing that resilience and investing in your stability. Sometimes growth starts not in the busiest moments, but in the moments when we finally have the space to listen to ourselves!
